Did you know that each month the full moon has a different name? On Thursday August 18th  the moon is called a Red Moon.  It is also known as a Sturgeon Moon after the large fish  common to the Great Lakes that is more easily caught during this month.

In Hawaii the full moon is called Kulu (Seventeenth Night)

On this night in Hawaii the moon’s rising is delayed until after darkness sets in. Kulu means ‘to flow, as tears’. The banana’s sheath drops off on this day, like falling tears, exposing its new bunch.  (happens in my garden )  The moon has a direct effect on the saps within plants, on the tides, and within the life cycles of all living things. On this full moon night it is a good time for planting sweet potatoes and melons (bread fruit, star fruit, papaya for example). This is the time for offering the seasons first fruits to akua. Currents are strong, but it is considered a good time for fishing.

Ancient Hawaiians lived by the Hawaiian moon calendar, you can follow the moon calendar found here:  HAWAIIAN MOON CALENDAR

Positive Moon and Surf Energy

During the full moon, the mighty ocean swells, the currents are strong, and so are our emotions.  If you find yourself getting angry or upset,  imagine  yourself floating and flowing with the tides  focusing on a positive intention such as, ” My intention is to invite peace and calm to others lives and within myself on this wonderful evening of full moon.”

The other thing fun about the full moon is surfing.  It is simply magical to be out in the moonlit waves. Just remember, never ever go surfing alone and even if with a full moon, make sure there is enough light to see others. Keep the vibe safe, positive, and fun.

Happy Full Moon to everyone, if you are out in Waikiki you might see a few ocean girls spreading good vibes and catching waves! Or maybe planting some more sweet potatoes! And if you can’t get to the beach, below is one my favorite peaceful full moon music videos for sleep and relaxing.
