Honolulu Christmas Tree Goes Green

ENV Christmas Tree wins Excellence Award for Community Service

Come down to the Honolulu City Lights Celebration and experience the Department of Environmental Services’ festive and interactive Christmas tree display.  Watch Green Channel videos, play a sort it out buzzer game and pick up free Christmas coloring books and recycling handy list stickers.

This year’s display features a rainforest theme complete with colorful butterflies, flowers, snakes and spiders.  You can even hear birds calling from the tree tops!  The tree is decorated with garland made from a variety of recyclable metals, plastics and organics winding their way into the blue and green recycling carts.

The Green Channel videos provide easy recycling tips to help you sort it out this holiday season.  The tips and many more Green Channel videos are available anytime on Oceanic Time Warner Cable channel 332 and streaming live on the City’s Opala.org website.

Handy List FINALPages from Spirits of Recycling Coloring Book

Free coloring books and recycling handy list stickers are available at the display.  The “Spirits of Recycling” coloring book uses fun and educational activities to help children learn what materials to recycle and how those materials are used.  The handy-list stickers provide information on what types of materials can be placed in the blue bin.  They can be placed on your cart or anywhere around your home as a simple reminder of what to recycle.

During the Holiday Season, we know that residents will have a greater and more colorful volume of rubbish and recyclables to sort.  For tips to make your Christmas green, go to our Holiday Trash Tips at Opala.org.  Information on curbside and bulky item collection is also available, along with 2015 curbside recycling calendars.
